Big Fig Mattress Review – 4 Reasons It Works

Big Fig Mattress

Big Fig mattresses are proudly made in the United States. Their single factory facility is located in Cleveland, Ohio. They specifically mention using American-made materials and skilled professionals in their manufacturing process. This information can be found on their website’s About Us page and in various marketing materials.

Here are some of the benefits they highlight about their domestic production:

  • Quality control: Being closer to the manufacturing process allows them to maintain stricter quality control standards.
  • Job creation: They contribute to the American economy by supporting local jobs and manufacturing.
  • Faster shipping: Manufacturing domestically reduces shipping times and carbon footprint compared to importing from overseas.
  • Transparency: By knowing where their mattresses are made, they offer increased transparency to customers.

What is the Big Fig Mattress?

The Big Fig Mattress is a specialized mattress designed for heavier individuals who require more support and durability than a standard mattress can provide. It is a hybrid mattress that combines foam layers with coil springs to provide a balance of comfort and support, and it is designed to last longer than a traditional mattress.

The Big Fig Mattress is made with high-density foam layers, a layer of latex foam for comfort and cooling, and a layer of individually wrapped coils for support. It also has a reinforced edge support system to prevent sagging and enhance durability, and a moisture-wicking cover to keep you cool and dry.

Overall, the Big Fig Mattress is designed to offer enhanced support, durability, and comfort to heavier individuals who may experience discomfort or premature wear and tear on traditional mattresses.

The Big Fig mattress is a mattress specifically designed for heavier people. That means it is made heavy duty and is extra durable. I often get requests for mattress recommendations among heavy sleepers and so being able to review a mattress to accommodate heavier sleepers was a welcome change. Often heavy sleepers will wear down a conventional mattress because of the extra weight. By designing a mattress to accommodate extra weight from the start means it should last longer and feel more comfortable in terms of providing adequate support.

Overview of the Big Fig

The Big Fig mattress does not come roll-packed. Instead, you can get is sent full size. Big Fig can send it to your door free of charge. For an extra amount, you can pay for white glove delivery where they will set it up in your home and remove the packaging. If you want the full white-glove experience plus removal, that will cost as of this writing, $159.00. With that service, you get the setup of the mattress plus removal of your old mattress.

A queen-size Big Fig costs $1,799.00. It comes with a 120-night trial where you can try it out in the comfort of your own home for over 3 months and if it’s not right for you, there’s a no pressure return. They will come and pick up the mattress for you.

You can also choose a heavy duty foundation which I highly recommend. You can buy heavy duty foundations on Amazon as well.

Here’s a video of me on the Big Fig. You can immediately feel that this is a heavy duty mattress that will stand up to extra weight.

My Big Fig Mattress Findings

This picture shows how much sink to expect on the mattress. Keep in mind this is a 16lb. bowling ball and the mattress is designed to support heavier people so you will get considerably more sink. In my findings, people who have tried this mattress out in the Yawnder showroom have different reactions. Slimmer people found it too firm while heavier people sank in a good amount and found it gave great support.

Big Fig Mattress Sink

In terms of motion transfer, this mattress has a pocket coils system and will have a fair amount of bounce to it. Although the top layers of foam will absorb quite a bit of that.

Here’s a video illustrating heat retention on the mattress. Heavier people tend to sleep hotter so this mattress was engineered to sleep cool. The thermogel foam and lycra cover help in that aspect and of course so do the springs to help with air flow. Since this is a heavy duty mattress, you won’t sink into this mattress as much as a traditional mattress which means less of the mattress will surround you and therefore less mattress to trap heat.

Here’s a video illustrating heat retention on the Big Fig using my infrared camera.

Big Fig vs. Winkbed Plus vs. Saatva HD

The Big Fig, WinkBed Plus, and Saatva HD are all mattresses designed to provide extra support and durability for heavier individuals. Here’s a brief comparison of these mattresses:

Big Fig:

  • 13 inches thick, with 3 layers of foam and 1 layer of coils
  • Reinforced edge support system
  • Firm feel
  • Made in the USA
  • 20-year warranty

WinkBed Plus:

  • 13.5 inches thick, with 5 layers of foam and coils
  • Lumbar support pad for added support in the center of the mattress
  • Medium-firm feel
  • Made in the USA
  • Lifetime warranty

Saatva HD:

  • 15.5 inches thick, with 5 layers of foam and coils
  • Dual perimeter edge support system
  • Plush feel
  • Made in the USA
  • 20-year warranty

All three mattresses are designed to provide extra support and durability for heavier individuals, and they each have their own unique features and benefits. The Big Fig and WinkBed Plus have a firmer feel, while the Saatva HD has a plush feel. The WinkBed Plus has a lumbar support pad for added support in the center of the mattress, while the Saatva HD has a dual perimeter edge support system. The Big Fig and Saatva HD have a 20-year warranty, while the WinkBed Plus has a lifetime warranty.

Ultimately, the best mattress for you will depend on your individual preferences and needs. We recommend reading reviews and comparing features to determine which mattress is the best fit for you.

My Big Fig Recommendation

The Big Fig is more expensive than many of the other online mattress options. However it is engineered specifically for heavy people. Therefore people under 225 lbs will probably find this mattress too firm. People above that weight threshold will enjoy the support that many of the other online competitors just can’t provide.

I appreciate that Big Fig has identified a critical need in the online mattress space which is creating a comfortable, supportive and most importantly, durable mattress for heavy sleepers. I can see this mattress outlasting many mattresses you find online and in stores by at least 2-3 years given the construction.

Who Owns Big Fig?

Big Fig Mattress is owned by BF Sleep LLC. DBA Big Fig Mattress. Jeff Brown is the current President of BF Sleep LLC DBA Big Fig Mattress.

Big Fig Mattress was founded by Alison Goodman and her father Bruce Goodman in 2016. The Goodman family has been in the mattress industry for over 90 years, and having grown up in the industry, Alison noticed there weren’t many options for heavy sleepers. That’s when she teamed up with her dad to create the Big Fig mattress.

Is the Big Fig Firm or Soft?

The Big Fig Mattress is designed to cater to the needs of heavier individuals or those who prefer a more supportive and firmer feel in their mattresses. While firmness is subjective and can vary from person to person, most people would describe the Big Fig Mattress as being on the firmer side. The mattress features a hybrid construction with a combination of foam layers and a pocketed coil system to provide ample support, durability, and comfort.

How Long Does the Big Fig Last?

The longevity of a mattress depends on factors such as usage, maintenance, and the quality of materials used. However, Big Fig Mattress is designed to be more durable and long-lasting than the average mattress, specifically catering to the needs of heavier individuals.

The company offers a 20-year warranty on their mattresses, which is an indication of their confidence in the product’s durability. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect the Big Fig Mattress to last for a significant amount of time, potentially up to 20 years. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that individual experiences may vary, and it is always a good idea to periodically evaluate your mattress for signs of wear and sagging.

Big Fig Weight Limit

The Big Fig Mattress is specifically designed for plus-size sleepers, and while they don’t state an exact weight limit, their marketing and specifications indicate suitable support for individuals up to a certain weight range. Here’s what we know:

Official Claims:

  • Big Fig states their mattress can support users up to 1,100 lbs with two sleepers (Queen, King or California King sizes), or 550 lbs with a single sleeper (on any mattress size).
  • They emphasize their use of high-density foam and extra-supportive coils that are built to withstand higher weights and have greater longevity for plus-size users.
  • Big Fig offers an independent lab test simulating 20 years of use with an oversized 350 lb sleeper to showcase the mattress’s durability.

Additional Considerations:

  • While these claims suggest Big Fig could accommodate individuals exceeding 550 lbs, individual experiences and comfort levels might differ.
  • Factors like sleeping position, body composition, and personal preference for firmness can influence suitability.
  • It’s crucial to consider your specific weight and comfort needs when choosing a mattress, regardless of any stated weight limits.

Recommendations:

  • If you fall within the weight range Big Fig mentions, the mattress could be a viable option.
  • If you exceed their stated weight range, consider trying the mattress during their 120-day trial period to assess comfort and support personally.
  • Regardless of weight, ensure you thoroughly research and compare different mattress options to find the best fit for your individual needs and sleep preferences.

Big Fig Mattress Edge Support and Motion Isolation: What You Need to Know

Edge Support: Big Fig boasts exceptional edge support, often cited as one of its key strengths. This is due to several factors:

  • Reinforced Edge Construction: High-density foam encases the perimeter of the mattress, providing a firmer feel and preventing sagging along the edges.
  • Sturdy Innerspring System: Individually encased coils throughout the mattress maintain consistent support even when weight is applied near the edges.
  • Thicker Profile: Compared to many standard mattresses, Big Fig’s 13-inch thickness contributes to its overall stability and resistance to edge collapse.

Customer Reviews: Many users praise the Big Fig’s edge support, allowing them to utilize the entire sleeping surface comfortably, and even sit on the edge without significant sinkage.

However:

  • Some reviewers mention a slightly softer feel near the edges compared to the center, which might not be ideal for everyone.
  • Individual experiences might vary based on body weight and sleeping position.

Motion Isolation: Big Fig generally receives positive feedback regarding motion isolation.

  • Individually Wrapped Coils: Each coil in the mattress reacts independently, minimizing transfer of movement across the sleeping surface.
  • High-Density Foam Layers: These layers absorb some motion and vibration, further reducing movement felt between sleepers.

However:

  • As with most mattresses, some motion transfer is inevitable, especially with significant movement or large weight differences between partners.
  • Lighter individuals might notice less motion transfer compared to heavier individuals.

Overall:

  • Big Fig appears to offer good edge support and motion isolation, potentially making it suitable for couples or individuals who share their bed with pets.
  • Consider researching customer reviews and trying the mattress during the trial period to assess its performance for your specific needs.

Big Fig Complaints

While Big Fig Mattress generally receives positive reviews and ratings, like any product, it also has some customer complaints. Here’s a breakdown of the common grievances you might encounter online:

Firmness: The most frequent complaint revolves around the bed’s firmness. Designed for heavier individuals, Big Fig is significantly firmer than many traditional mattresses. This can be uncomfortable for lighter sleepers or those who prefer a softer feel.

Limited pressure relief: Although supportive, some users report inadequate pressure relief, particularly around the shoulders and hips. This could be an issue for people with specific pain points or joint problems.

Edge support: While generally praised, some reviews claim the edge support isn’t as strong as advertised, making it less comfortable for sitting or sleeping near the edge.

Price: Compared to some other plus-size mattresses, Big Fig can be considered expensive. While offering premium materials and construction, the price might not be suitable for all budgets.

Return policy: The 120-day trial period allows returns, but some customers find the return process inconvenient or challenging, with potential return shipping fees exceeding the initial savings.

Off-gassing: Some users report a slight initial odor upon unpacking, although it usually dissipates quickly. This might be a concern for individuals with sensitivities to off-gassing from new materials.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Customer complaints are always subjective and individual experiences may vary.
  • Many users praise the mattress for its comfort, support, and quality construction, particularly for heavier individuals.
  • It’s crucial to research and compare different mattress options before making a purchase, considering your personal needs and preferences.

Big Fig vs. Winkbeds Plus

Big Fig and WinkBeds Plus are both mattresses specifically designed to accommodate heavier individuals or couples. They have been engineered to provide the necessary support and durability that might be lacking in standard mattresses. Here’s a comparison of both:

  1. Big Fig:

Big Fig is designed with a hybrid construction that includes both foam and springs. The company claims that its mattress can support significantly more weight than a standard mattress without losing its shape or integrity. Here are some key features:

    • Hybrid Construction: Big Fig features a combination of high-density foams and pocketed coil springs for optimal support and comfort.

    • ThermoGel Cooling Technology: The mattress cover is treated with ThermoGel cooling technology, which helps to maintain a cool sleeping surface.

    • Edge Support: Big Fig incorporates high-density foam around the edges for added edge support.

    • Foundation: Big Fig mattresses include a specially designed foundation, which is stronger than a typical foundation or box spring.

  2. WinkBeds Plus:

The WinkBeds Plus is another hybrid mattress designed specifically for heavier individuals. Some key features include:

    • Hybrid Design: The WinkBeds Plus combines a Euro-pillow top, high-density foam, and a pocketed coil system to provide a balance of comfort and support.

    • Extra-Edge™ Anti-Sag Support: To prevent sagging and provide more usable sleep surface, WinkBeds Plus includes extra edge support.

    • LumbarLayer™: This is a patented technology for extra back support to enhance body alignment.

    • SleepCalm™ Motion Isolation: This feature helps to minimize motion transfer, which can be beneficial for couples sharing the bed.

    • Tencel Cover: WinkBeds Plus uses a Tencel cover, known for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

In conclusion, both Big Fig and WinkBeds Plus are strong contenders if you’re looking for a mattress designed for heavier people. Both offer hybrid designs that combine the benefits of foam and innerspring mattresses, and both provide cooling and edge support.

  1. I need a matress thats not firm due to the fact that i sleep on my side most of the time. I weigh in at a whopping 325 pounds. Do you think this matress is too firm for a side sleeper? Thank you

    Reply
    • It will be firmer given it is made to support larger frames but in this rare instance if you find it to be too firm I would add a topper. You may wear down the topper but it will be cheaper to replace than a whole mattress.

    • I purchased the Big Fig and the jury is still out. I’m 500 pounds a side sleeper as well. The mattress is so hard when you get it ( baring the fact that you might get one that was returned and I guess cleaned repackaged ) that we had to get a 3 inch topper just to sleep on it. I think its a well built product and that is why I invested another 250 dollars for a topper. But I’m now only able to sleep on it for 3 hours get up let my hip rest for about an hour before returning back to bed. I’m still in the trial period so still not sure I will keep it. Sad thing is there is no bad reviews only good ones so that is miss leading. I try to leave a review similar to this one on the big fig site and they will not publish it. Good luck it is built well but not sure its a good fit for me.

    • I can’t make any guarantees but I think they have filled a need and they make a quality product. I expect them to be around at least 5 years.

  2. This mattress is so firm. For a big guy (350 lbs) who is a side sleeper, this mattress is terrible for me. Waking up with pain every morning. My partner, who is average weight (200) this mattress is like sleeping on bricks.

What should be our next choice? I tried the winkbed in your showroom…. it also felt very firm. I loved the dreamcloud bed you had set up. The sales guys sorta steered me away from it. I think he was afraid it would breakdown too fast due to my size.

    Any thoughts?

I have contacted Bigfig, I’ve heard they will send me out a 3 inch topper if I want.

    • i am 345 wife is half that. Dreamcloud was our 1st purchase in 2018, as i liked the money back thing. was great at first, became way to saggy within weeks. next was a firm serta hybrid. woke up at midnight in pain. Now laying on a simmons plush black series and it’s dreamcloud repeat. Bigfig will be here in 10 days.

  3. Hello! Wanted to check in because your reviews were so helpful to me when I was trying out mattresses: thank you!

I weigh in at 330, am a side sleeper with serious back problems (spinal stenosis, disc compression etc etc) and ended up with the big fig. Have had it for about a year now. Almost returned it at first because it was so firm, but got the foam topper and that combo has worked well for me. I used to wake up in worse back pain in the morning with my previous [high end, luxury] mattress, and that’s no longer true.

I rotate the mattress (with help) every month and am thinking I’ll replace the topper soon, it’s feeling a little flat. Do you have any thoughts about how often to replace a topper, sleep sherpa?

A bonus: The big fig people were really wonderful to deal with!

Thanks again for your helpful site.

    • Toppers will wear down quicker than a mattress so if you feel you are losing support then it’s probably time. I would say every 18 months to 2 years.
